I went and compared 3 similar portable speakers with each other (same price of around $100 each): JBL Flip 4 – Best quality sound of the 3 (amazing quality – very similar to Bose Soundlink Mini) – No noticeable crackle at max volume with high treble in music – Strongest/deepest bass (my table was shaking on max volume) – Very loud max volume Ultimate Ears WONDERBOOM – Smaller than JBL 4 but larger than Bose Micro – Crackling at max volume for some songs with high treble (Was not expecting this) – Bass is not as strong (very slight bass) – Very loud max volume (similar to JBL 4) Bose SoundLink Micro Bluetooth – Smallest of the 3 – Max sound was at 75% that of JBL 4/Ultimate Ears – Sounds “muffled” and not clear (quality is not even close to that of Bose Soundlink Mini) – Exposed charging slot (is this really waterproof?) Overall – I would pick JBL (amazing quality & very similar to Bose Soundlink Mini, but waterproof!) and Ultimate Ears for portability (75 % size of JBL 4). The Bose Micro, although very small, had really poor quality sound for the price (most disappointing). Read more

Ridiculous. It won’t let you connect via bluetooth unless you download the app, you can’t download the app without putting in a credit card (REALLY!!), then after all that (and putting in my apple ID 3 times), what does this amazing app do? It connects the speaker to my iphone. So, I’m giving my data and my financial information for no added value. Any of my other bluetooth devices don’t require a special app or access to my money. If I had read this, I would not have bought it. Even if it performs well, this is such low-brow behavior, I would not have bought it. SO, it could be the best ever device, but I’ll never buy another Bose product. Read more

This is Exactly what I wanted from Bose, a water resistant speaker and tough enough to handle extream situations, I’m currently deployed in Afghanistan and this speaker is loud enough with perfect bass for its size, the sound quality is unmatched to the JBL flip 3 I have, though the JBL is louder but does not that the quality or bass I wanted. You get what you pay for with Bose products, now mind you this is a tiny speaker so don’t think you are gonna get the sound like the Soundlink Mini, it’s a bigger speaker thus bigger sound. But if your looking for light weight and durable to carry into any situations, this is the speaker for you. I highly recommend this product for any Bose fan Read more

I purchased this speaker to use on my bicycle handebar while bike commuting with the hope that it would be more waterproof than the competition. The audio quality and waterproofness seem to be great but wow, the strap design is TERRIBLE. I ask, what is the point of a nice $100 speaker if its rolling under the tire of a dump truck? Luckily every time this thing fell off my handlebars I was able to retrieve it before it was run over but the hook piece embedded in the silicone strap eventually failed. I assumed that since this device is only 7 months old that it would be covered under warranty but NOPE, apparently Bose doesn’t stand by their design. I won’t be purchasing a Bose speaker ever again and I would advise to to avoid this product until they come up with a better design for securing the speaker to your bike. Read more

I’m torn writing this review of the Bose SoundLink Micro Bluetooth speaker. On its own, and with nothing to compare, the sound is clear, undistorted, and loud enough for outdoors. It’s IP7 waterproof (you can literally dunk it in 1 meter of water for 30 min) and dust-proof, so it’s rugged for true outdoor use, biking, or a day at the beach. At 10 ounces, it’s not going to break your carry-on or backpack with weight. The built-in mounting band is brilliant – you can attach this to your belt, a strap on your backpack, even a thin bicycle handle and it locks securely. You get about 6 hours of playback on a single charge. This is a single (mono) speaker, but Bose provides an app (Bose Connect) that lets you pair multiple SoundLink speakers together for stereo, and it largely works well (as long as you’re using the latest generation Bose bluetooth devices). I tested this with both iOS 10 and iOS 11 from two different devices (Apple iPhone 7 Plus and iPad Pro) and pairing was fast, and easy to change devices. Each time you connect your device, the SoundLink Micro announces that it is paired (“connected!”). I wish there was an option to disable the spoken prompt (maybe in a future firmware release). The Bose Connect app also lets you set language, name the device, and apply firmware updates. The first firmware update took 90 minutes (!) on a fast connection – perhaps Bose servers were overloaded. All this is good. And – compared to other single-speaker offerings in this size – the sound is clear, balanced, and doesn’t distort at higher volumes. The problem comes when you compare this to Bose’s other offerings – namely the trusty SoundLink Mini that has been my travel workhorse for years. Yes, the SoundLink Mini is larger and heavier (1 pound, 8 oz vs 10 oz) and it’s not waterproof. But there is absolutely *no comparison* in sound quality. First of all, as a mono speaker, you’re giving up sound separation and presence for portability and size and that is to be expected. But the real issue is that the Micro has a “thin” quality lacking not only in bass and but mid-range too. Yes, the sound is clear and balanced, but when you compare the sound of the SoundLink Micro to the Bose SoundLink Mini, the Micro sounds like a “Bose with a cold”. I tried to upload a video that clearly demonstrates the sound difference but couldn’t figure out how to attach it to this review. My recommendation? Go for the SoundLink Mini unless you absolutely need the size and waterproof form factor that the SoundLink Micro offers. Read more
