First time projector buyer so this will be from a newbie’s perspective. So far very impressed. The size of the projector is very portable. Not soda can portable, but reminds me of a mini-PC or Mac Mini. Can easily mount to a Joby Gorillapod (DSLR) or regular triped. It includes an Anker PowerPort III 65W as the charger and a 3-meter USB-C cable that I assume is also Anker so it should be high quality. The autofocus and keystone adjustability is really nice and quick and the picture quality is very clear even on a non-white wall (ours is a light eggshell color). I don’t have a complete blacked out room/home theater but nightime viewing against a wall is very impressive and bright, and totally sufficient for movie nights. I would imagine a proper screen would improve things even more.Immediately updated firmware after initial setup. While it doesn’t have fully native Netflix from the Google Play store, the Solar has a built in app called Nebula Manager that you can use to sideload Netflix and get most of the functionality of a native app. The only downside I’ve experienced to this solution is that you can’t get a Netflix favorite to display on the Android TV homescreen (or their recommendations ribbon) and the Netflix app is best controlled by the Nebula Connect app on your phone (connected to the projector through bluetooth). When using the sideloaded Netflix app, you can’t pause/resume the video with the remote control, but the phone/app controls work fine to engage pause/resume. Otherwise seems to tick all boxes. I’ve installed and tried out Amazon Video, Disney+, Vudu, Hulu, HBO Max, Movies Anywhere, Shotime Anywhere, FandangoNow, and Plex and they all install normally through the Google Play store onto Android TV. Chromecasting works well for everything except Netflix. The Nebula Manager app for AirPlay, AirPin(PRO), seemed to work fine for generic mirroring of an iPhone display but conked out when trying to play protected videos as well (i.e. Netflix).Pros:True HDUSB-C power input so easy portable charging with a 65W battery packAnker PowerPort III 65W charger ($40 value and multi-use)Netflix compatible-ish without having to plug in Chromecast/Fire Stick/RokuCons:Bluetooth audio only allows for 1 connection at a time, so an external speaker is ok but 2 simultaneous headsets won’t work.No Carrying Case and Nebula doesn’t sell an official one yet like they do for the Capsule and Mars. Need to store in box until I find a proper storage solutionWould be nice to have a lens cover/protectorNetflix controls are limited with remote, need to use phone/Nebula app for complete controlsPlay/Pause buttons on the remote would have been nice, or ability to switch to mouse controls on remote to resolve Netflix constraintOverall, very pleased with the overall quality and excited to use this more. Seems like an excellent all-in-one system for movie watching, especially if you have a solid wifi signal. Also have had good experience with Anker products and customer support in the past so I feel a little more confident with this purchase and their warranty coverage.Read more

== Update on 2021/01/01:Nebula support reached out and asked me to keep the projector for free and join their beta test program to help them improve the device. So I didn’t return the projector and I will keep this review updated:* I updated the system to the latest (beta?) version. I didn’t notice any significant changes to the issues I mentioned in my original review.* I did more testing on the washed-out color issue. I confirmed that the projector is requesting 4K HDR content from the source (and downscaling to 1080p?). So both projectors are using the same source. I used LG OLED as reference. MoGo Pro’s color is indeed more accurate.* My hypothesis is that Solar Portable’s blue color seems a bit off and less saturated. It explains its gray color vs. blue-ish from XGIMI MoGo Pro in the Deadpool scene attached. However, I found it less an issue when watching more colorful scenes. I’m not sure if this blue color issue only applies to my device or the model in general.I changed my rating to 3 stars given that the washed-out color affects limited scenarios. For the same price, I still recommend XGIMI MoGo Pro unless you really need the 3 hours batter life from Solar Portable.== Initial review on 2020/12/08:I bought the XGIMI MoGo Pro recently and saw this new projector from Anker went on sale. On paper, it has higher lumens and longer battery life. And it came out 10 months later than XGIMI MoGo Pro. For the same price, I planned to get it and return the MoGo Pro. It turned out to be a huge disappointment:* It is much bigger and heavier than MoGo Pro (4lbs vs. 2lbs). Well, it has higher lumens and longer battery life. So that is understandable.* While both build quality are solid, Solar Portable is not as good looking as MoGo Pro.* When I turned it on, the first thing I noticed was its loud fan noise. I thought the MoGo Pro already has a loud fan. But its noise level not even close to Solar Portable’s.* I tested the picture/video quality in a dark room. I can tell Solar Portable is slightly brighter. But 33% brighter? My eyes do not agree.* The main problem of the Solar Portable is its washed-out color. See the attached photo. Solar Portable is on the left and MoGo Pro is on the right. I tried the standard/cool/warm modes. None fixed it.* Also a clear difference in speaker. I don’t care about whether the speakers are labelled “harman kardon” or not. Sound quality matters. Sound from MoGo Pro is more vivid, while that from Solar Portable is quite dull.I use many products from Anker and I love them, but not Solar Portable. I’m returning it.Read more

Everything to dislike about the Mars II Pro is fixed with the Solar… Audio is much louder, higher resolution, Android TV (instead of Android 7.1…), angle adjustment built in, bluetooth audio sync (when using hdmi input) issues fixed, invoke auto focus using the remote, auto keystone actually works, and you don’t have to point the remote at the back of the unit. Now, it’s worthy of the Anker name.Cons:No Netflix, yet (11/08/2020)… Pending some kind of certification, I’m guessing.Could be brighter, but still good enough.Read more

Ok, here’s an honest review. The projector itself size an portability is a plus. As far as the system:1. Android TV looks great, especially with YouTube channel streaming. Here’s one important factor though that im disappointed with. The auto focus function is bad. Its difficult to adjust and it’ll literally take you a while for it to actually get the correct focus. Its either auto or the button on the remote and both such.Another main factor for those video geeks as myself. I love to always load my usbs with movies such as mp4s, mkvs, etc. Some of them are 1080. 720 and higher encoded.Running a movie from a usb. For example a 1080 formatted is a disappointed. Looks more like a low 720 resolution. The quality is not there. I happened to own a Nebula Capsule Max that runs on the android system. This projector seems much better. The auto focus is easy and reliable. The streaming looks awesome. AND when I play a video from my usb it looks great. The same usb played on the nebula solar looks bad compared to the nebula Max.So there’s something definitely work needed for the techs and designers who made this projector.Read more
