I was nervous buying this since there are relatively little reviews. Luckily, it turned out well. I had previously bought an Xgimi Mogo Pro, and the WeMax Dice beats it in almost every way. I ended up returning the Xgimi Mogo Pro.Here are the advantages, as I see it, compared to the Mogo Pro:-It is much brighter. I use this for outdoor movies and I am able to start the movie earlier in the evening.-The battery life is better. I had range anxiety with the Mogo Pro. I could barely get through a short movie, unless I dimmed the picture. With the Dice, I can comfortably watch an average-length movie without concern at normal brightness levels.-The cord is longer. The Mogo Pro’s cord was too short. This one reaches my outlet without needing an extension.-The built-in sound is much better. The Mogo Pro was barely audible in an outdoor setting. This definitely gets loud enough. There is sometimes some sound clipping with loud noises on the low end, but it’s not too bad. Hopefully they could improve this with an update.-The build quality is better. The Mogo Pro wasn’t so bad, but the Dice is definitely a step up. It feels well built and has nice materials.-Their customer service is actually pretty good. I have reached out about some sound issues (see below) and have been very quick to respond.I’ve only seen one negative so far:-The headphone out is too quiet. I like to connect this to a UE Hyperboom for a better outdoor sound experience, but the audio output from the headphone jack is too quiet. It feels like I should be able to turn up the sound more, but I cannot. Their customer service said they would take a look at the problem. This is one advantage with the Mogo Pro, as it supports Bluetooth low-latency, so I wouldn’t even need to hook up a cord to the Hyperboom at all.I’m giving them the benefit of the doubt at the moment, since it’s brand new. Everything else about it is nearly flawless. To get around the lack of Netflix/Amazon Prime in the Google Play Store, I would suggest using Aptoide TV (Google it). I was able to install builds of Netflix and Amazon Prime that work with the device.****UPDATE****After a system update, there is now no lag between the video and audio over bluetooth. Great! The update also killed my Netflix app (from Aptoide) so that is unfortunate. The app just disappeared, and I am not able to install it again from Aptoide. Unfortunate. It was almost perfect.Read more

My wife and I wanted an option to bring with us on camping trips, plus with Covid not going away soon we decided to invest in a portable projector. I did a lot of research (… a LOT, I’m a nerd) and I was waffling between the Xgimi projectors (Mogo Pro or Halo) and the WeMax Dice (AKA ForMovie Dice, AKA Xiaomi something-or-other, and probably more names!).When the Prime Days sale popped up and made the WeMax Dice only $549 ($150 off) I jumped on it. At 500 ANSI lumens on battery and 700 ANSI lumens when plugged in, it’s way brighter than the Xgimi Mogo Pro which is rated at 300 ANSI lumens and costs $549 normally. The Xgimi Mogo Pro will be on sale for $439 on their site on Black Friday, so keep that in mind if brightness isn’t your biggest concern. Also keep in mind that the Xgimi Halo, which has 800 ANSI lumens, will be $148 off for Black Friday if you also get their desktop stand, making the combo $680 on the Xgimi website.Despite those sale prices, I still think the WeMax Dice is the winner here if you can get it on sale. Right now it’s $140 off, so it ends up being only $559! If you’re going to get one of the two projectors I’d recommend, either the Halo or the Dice, try to watch for a sale. At $559 you absolutely can’t go wrong with the WeMax Dice. The remote works really well, the speakers are surprisingly loud, the brightness (when plugged in) is watchable on our deck even during the day, and after getting the projector it got an Android update only a week or two later so it’s good to see they’re getting updates. I’m hoping that there is a possibility that it will eventually get the Google TV overlay. I’m really happy that there is a tripod screw mount, as well as a “ceiling” option for the projection mode, since I decided to install ceiling mounts under our deck cover and also in our small studio space to make mounting and moving the projector around a lot easier.Oh, and as for portable power, I ended up buying a Choetech power brick that has 100w USB-C PD (power delivery), and when connecting that to a USB-C to 2.5mm PD cable I’m able to power/charge the projector from a power brick! This not only makes the projector run at max brightness, but also makes it last a lot longer when playing a movie. I haven’t tested the full runtime yet, but if I get a chance to time it in the future I’ll come back and add more details. My only complaints are as follows, and they’re fairly minor:1) The auto-focus is really quite effective, but I’ve noticed that over the course of watching a TV show (45 minutes) it will get slightly out of focus. This may be because of the heat, or the vibration from the cooling fan, I’m not sure, but it isn’t too obvious until you go back to a menu and have to read text.2) the auto-keystone is great for vertical adjustments, but it doesn’t auto-adjust for horizontal changes from what I’ve experienced.3) Connectivity. It would be really handy if this projector had a USB-C port to allow for charging, since that would make my makeshift battery solution a lot simpler.4) It would be nice if the projector had the HDMI ARC (audio return channel) feature so the audio from the projector could be sent to our receiver over HDMI. My solution was to get a Chromcast with Google TV for our studio so I have a similar interface when listening to audio through the receiver and using the HDMI input on the projector. That’s it for now, we’re really happy with this projector!Read more

Before purchasing this projector, I did a lot of research and was leaning toward a Nebula. In the end, I decided that I wanted something with 1080p and a brighter image, preferably with some good streaming software. If you’re looking for a great portable projector, you should give the Dice a look.PROS: Great image, crisp, great color, and very bright. Autofocus and keystone adjustments work great. Plugged in, you have your choice of max brightness or eco (probably half the normal brightness). Running on the battery, the setting defaults to eco mode, which is still bright. Sound is a little on the bassy side, but the speakers do get loud. And very easy to use and navigate with the included remote.CONS: Android TV. Just ugh. Some apps run fine, but there’s no Netflix and the version of Hulu it runs is too buggy to be watchable. It’s not entirely Android TV’s fault as there’s more and more fragmenting of apps across the different ecosystems. I have a spare Roku stick, which works like a dream plugged into this projector. So for some specific apps, you’ll probably want to attach another streaming device (Amazon fire stick, Roku, or Apple TV.I’ve mostly been using out in a small urban backyard at night with about a 72 inch image. Looks pretty great even on just a cinderblock wall, but looks amazing with a proper screen.Highly recommended projector as long as you know you won’t necessarily be able to stream everything you might want from the version of Android TV running on it. But where it counts—picture quality—it definitely delivers.Read more
