Well built, sturdy unit from Behringer which works exactly as described EXCEPT the mike gain is woefully low – just usable with a condenser mike but inadequate with a typical dynamic. Examination of the circuit components surrounding the mike op amp calls into question the claimed 40db mike gainFortunately ,there is a fix for those who are technically inclined. The device uses 2 x 4580 dual op amps; one for the mike and one for the monitor. The first op amp of the mike 4580 deals with the actual mike gain, so best not to mess with this as I’d like to think Behringer have used well matched components to ensure the balance of the mike circuitry, essential if the mike is being used to make high quality recordings. However, the second op amp is merely used as a unity gain buffer, so tweaking this will have no effect on the mike pass through integrity. It involves only two resistors, a soldering iron and a steady hand. Replacing the strap feeding the output back to the negative input of this op amp with a 4k7 resistor and a 1k resistor from the negative input to ground will give about 13dbs extra gain. This has transformed the unit so the mike volume need not be flat out to get a decent headphone levelRead more

After hours of experimenting, and time on Cakewalk user forums about recording input monitoring – an easy and cheap solution! How to hear your last recorded track and your current recording input. Behringer must have people out in the field to devise such a perfect fix for a nagging problem. Forget “input echo” – it is too geeky a solution, involving tweaking “latency”, “miliseconds”, etc. Just plug your interface’s output into the MA400’s monitor input, plug your mic in the mic input, then the mic thru into a mixer and back into the USB interface – viola!! You can turn down your mixer’s output (to Cakewalk) as much as needed, and turn up your headphone mix as needed. It was a recording engineer that pointed me to the headphone amp solution, then my trust in Behringer and a Google search to pick this one. I wish I had talked to my engineer friend sooner.Read more

If you have a small band/group and the ability to route various AUX sends to monitors, this little device from Behringer can save a bunch of money over the more pricey options. In my experience with the device you will need to use it differently than it may be intended. The reason for this is the weak signal the input gives for the TRS monitor in. The “More Me” mic in and out work perfectly, however and so the solution I use is this:From your digital board use one of your AUX sends as a monitor mix and route it to the mic input instead of the monitor input on the device. Then, just use your headphones and mix your monitor as you like. Using it like this allows you to control all the signals coming to you and adjust your level as you like. It’s not a good solution for larger bands but with the new breed of digital mixers, AUX sends are getting plentiful.Read more

Great idea. I’m using mine a little differently. I take a mono out from my XR18 that is the mix of the band into the XLR input then run a stereo headphone out from the keyboard into the stereo jack on the unit (effectively backwards from how they intended). This means that the keyboard player is hearing himself in stereo and the band in mono. It’s solved all our monitor issues for the keyboards and it was very inexpensive! Sound quality is good overall. We use open wedges and he was getting lost in the mix at times.Read more

I am a drummer who sings. I’ve been a professional musician for 35 years and toured throughout the United States. There are some unique problems that singing drummers have that this unit truly solves. I have always struggled to hear myself and monitors against the sound of my own drums without blowing out the other players. I have also struggled with clarity as a singer because I could not get that extra edge in the monitor mix so that I could tune my notes as I sing. This unit is strong and clean. It solves all my problems WITHOUT dealing with a sound man. I don’t have to ask for more of what I need to hear. All of the connections are tight and strong. No static or noise. Just clean, clear performance. The other player/singers in my band now want one for themselves. They noticed immediately the improvement in my vocal abilities and the more relaxed way I sang. This unit has made all the difference.Read more

Bought this so I could use headphones with my big living room tv.Worked out great. I bought it and this is NOT a sponsored review (I’m a real guy).I connected it to the tv with RCA Cable from tv (left and right channels) to an RCA to stereo 1/4 adapter that plugs into the back of the amp in the “MONITOR INPUT” jack in the back. Plugged a 1/8 headphone extension cord into the front jack in the front and then connected my headphones to the extension cord.So when I want to watch tv at night in the living room and not disturb anyone, or if I just want to hear the tv louder when other people are watching at low volumes, I just unroll the headphone extension cord towards the couch, plug in my headphones and listen. My headphones have a volume control on them so I just turned the unit headphone volume up about 3/4’s and then adjust the volume at my headphones. If you’re headphones don’t have a volume control this unit would be perfect to adjust overall headphone volume. The unit provides more than enough volume for me in this application, in fact if I turned it up all the way it would be too loud. So enough volume headroom in this application. The unit is small — about the size of the palm of a man’s hand — so it’s doesn’t take up a lot of room on my tv table.I’m a musician, so I was thinking, hey I might also use this little unit down the road for it’s original intent.Like a lot of inexpensive Behringer devices, the unit does not have a power switch, you plug it into the power supply and it’s on.Read more
